BUYERS GUIDE

Firstly, if you can, please take time to have a careful look through our products. Whether you're looking for a double bed, king or single mattress, whether pocket sprung, foam or perhaps a storage bed, we've got great options for you - and at great prices!

Do I Need A Mattress?

Do you actually need a new bed?

Good question. There’s a number of reasons why now might be the time:

  • Your current one is just worn out, and another bad night is one too many
  • Medical reasons (ie bad back)
  • A growing family
  • It’s a first time purchase
  • New house

If you’re regularly getting poor sleep through being uncomfortable, it just could be that your mattress itself that’s the cause. Beds don’t last forever – and neither will you if the quality of your sleep is in question! Here’s a few thoughts:

  • Can’t remember when you last changed your mattress?
  • Do you sleep better in a bed that’s not your own?
  • Do you wake with aches or muscle stiffness?
  • Is your mattress uneven, lumpy or sagging in places?
  • Is your unsatisfying sleep getting slowly worse?

Are you short of bedroom storage? If so, perhaps you might benefit from a storage divan base, rather than a bedstead. Or indeed an ottoman base – we have one here in our Factory Shop - they’re fantastic.

HELP! WHERE DO I START?

Firstly, before looking, it’s best to stop and think about what you actually want from a new bed. We’d recommend you do this before looking too hard.

Type: No one mattress is ideal for everyone. What do you actually like or dislike about your current bed?

Size: Is the size right; or could it do with being a bit bigger? Couples in particular rarely say their bed is too large.

If it fits your room, a larger bed means less disturbance to a partner should you share your sleeping space. Our advice is to choose the biggest you can accommodate and the best you can afford. As a guide you should be able to lie side by side with your hands behind your head without elbows touching. DID YOU KNOW? Proportionally adult mattresses are smaller than the size of a toddler mattress.

Mattress sizes we offer:
Small Single 2'6" x 6'3" (75 x 190cm) please check - only occasionally available.
Single 3' x 6'3" (90 x 190cm)
Small Double 4'0" x 6'3" (120 x 190cm)
Double 4'6" x 6'3" (135 x 190cm)
King 5'0" x 6'6" (150 x 200cm)
Super King 6'0" x 6'6" (180x200cm)

Support: Would you prefer your mattress were firmer or softer, or just right as it is?

Such a vital subject. For example, as we’re all built differently, what might feel firm to a person with a slight build, might feel a lot softer to someone of a larger build. As a general guide the heavier a person is, the firmer the tension is needed; ultimately it’s down to personal preference.

Everyone sleeps differently – on the front, side or back, or more likely a combination of all three. Some prefer a soft, enveloping feel while others can’t stand it. Medium support tends to be the most popular. We offer a soft, medium and firm choice in varying degrees. Be clear in your mind what you’re after and choose what works best for you.

Price: Possibly the biggest decider. Do look carefully, as the lowest price (or indeed the most expensive) isn’t necessarily the most appropriate choice for you.
Buy the best you can afford – but buy the size and tension that suits your needs the best. An expensive purchase isn’t something you want to repeat too often, so you'll want it to last and always feel really comfy.

Safety: Buying from the factory shop you can be assured that the product meets all the stringent UK fire regulations. Don't be tempted with cheap imports which often do not comply with UK legislation and can end up being dangerous.

WHAT'S INSIDE A MATTRESS?

There are several choices, here’s our quick guide:

Open Coil

Open Coil Springs

Rows of springs joined together. A more affordable, supportive option - typically with a lower price than pocket springs. At Airsprung Beds we use our durable Supercoil open coil unit.

Pocket Springs

Pocket Springs

Individual springs which move independently to each other. Avoids ‘roll-together’ if a shared sleeping space. Spring counts from 100’s to 1000’s depending on price.

Mini Springs

Mini-Pocket Springs

A littler version of a full-sized pocket spring; these add just a little extra comfort and support. Typically, these complement the full size springs.

Memory Foam

Memory Foam

High density that reacts to body shape, pressure-absorbing particularly in pressure-sensitive areas such as hips and shoulders.

Rolled Mattress

Rolled Mattress

This has become an increasingly popular way to buy a mattress, particularly when bought online. Being far easier to transport, it’s extremely convenient. From a greener, more sustainable perspective it’s a winner transport-wise. Not all mattresses are available rolled – particularly the higher end or deeper models which are unsuitable for rolling.

Mattress Fillings

Fillings

These are what make up the comfort layers within a sprung mattress – they vary dependent upon levels of price and luxury. They can comprise a whole host of options from trusted suppliers - whether man made, ie polyester (all Airsprung polyester used is at least 80% recycled), or natural materials such as wool, cotton or bamboo etc. Whichever - all are chosen for their comfort, insulation properties, flexibility and ability to contend with body moisture.

Oso Double 2 Drawer Slate Grey Divan Base

BASES

Divan bases consistently remain the UK’s most popular choice because they’re so versatile in offering storage options. In simple terms it’s a simply upholstered, framed platform on castors, glides or legs. Ours are on chrome glides. The divans come in two colour choices, and are available with matching headboards - we've 2 styles.

It’s important to check that a mattress and base fit together size-wise, particularly if not being bought together. By the way, our ottoman is a base which lifts from the front to reveal a storage space within. It’s a clever alternative to drawers.
